Setup guide

From installer to tuned headset.

The full path: install, get Windows pointing at the right device, then set surround, EQ and microphone the way you actually want them.

Part 1

Installing

  1. Connect the headset over USB

Use the USB cable, the wireless dongle, or the base station. A 3.5 mm cable or a Bluetooth link will not be detected by the app.

  2. Run the installer as administrator

It installs an audio driver alongside the app, which needs elevated permissions. Allow it when Windows asks.

  3. Restart Windows

Skipping the reboot is why spatial audio often looks enabled but changes nothing — the virtual device isn't live until then.

  4. Open the app and let it find your device

The headset should appear by name. If it doesn't, jump to the troubleshooting section below.

  5. Install any firmware update it offers

Headset, dongle and base station update separately. Keep everything connected and charged until each finishes.

Part 2

Pointing Windows at the right device

This is the step most people skip, and it breaks everything downstream.

Playback device

Open Settings → System → Sound and set your JBL Quantum device as the output. If you see both a plain headset entry and a Quantum surround entry, the surround one is what the app processes through.

Recording device

In the same panel, set the Quantum microphone as the input, then speak and watch the level meter move before you go looking for other problems.

Per-app overrides

Windows remembers per-application audio devices. Discord, OBS and games each keep their own — check them individually if only one app sounds wrong.

Turn off Windows enhancements

Windows spatial sound and audio enhancements stack badly with QuantumSURROUND. Pick one; running both makes everything sound hollow.

Part 3

Dialling it in

For competitive shooters

Spatial sound on, and ease off the deep bass so explosions stop burying footsteps. Small treble lift, not a big one.

For single-player and film

Spatial sound on, flat-ish EQ. This is where the wide soundstage actually earns its place.

For music

Spatial sound off. Stereo mixes are already positioned; processing them just smears the image.

Microphone level

Set gain so normal speech peaks comfortably short of the top. Push it lower than feels right — clipping can't be fixed later.

Sidetone

Just enough to hear yourself. Too much and you'll unconsciously talk too quietly for everyone else.

Save it as a profile

Name each setup once and switch between them, rather than dragging sliders every time you change what you're doing.

Part 4

When something's wrong

The app doesn't detect my headset

Check you're on USB rather than Bluetooth or 3.5 mm, then try a different USB port — preferably one directly on the motherboard rather than a hub or front-panel port. Unplug, wait a few seconds, plug back in with the app open. If it still doesn't appear, restart the JBL background service from Task Manager, or reboot.

No sound after installing

Almost always the default device. Set the Quantum output in Windows sound settings, then check per-app overrides for the program that's silent. Reboot if you haven't since installing.

Spatial audio doesn't seem to do anything

You're likely playing through the plain headset device instead of the surround one, or Windows' own spatial sound is fighting it. Pick the Quantum surround output, and disable Windows spatial sound and audio enhancements.

Microphone is too quiet or nobody can hear me

Confirm the Quantum mic is the Windows input, that the boom isn't muted by the headset's own control, and that gain is up in the app. Then check whichever app is calling — Discord and OBS both keep their own device selection.

Settings reset every time I restart

The app needs to be running for the settings it processes on the PC. Make sure it starts with Windows, and that no cleanup or optimiser tool is disabling its startup entry.

A firmware update failed partway

Leave the device connected and try the update again from the app rather than unplugging. If the device is unresponsive after a failed flash, that's a case for JBL support rather than a workaround.
